Note: These are the fictional stories that creep out of my head. They often bark at me during the wee hours of the night or morning. If they resemble any other stories, it is not intended. Names, characters, places, and incidents either are the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events, or locales is entirely coincidental.

A River of Love

They called it the right stuff

As if stuff was all we needed.

Now they say, “Lose the stuff.

Fun and adventure await.

Live a minimalists’ life.

It will give you peace.”

Stuff or no stuff?

How can either be the answer?

Beloved, I have not found the solution

In stuff or in the lack of it.

For me, answers arrive on the

River of love that runs in

Your eyes.

Beloved, you are here again.

Our fire is still warm.

Here, beside the hearth, we talk.

You heard me calling you

From far across great oceans

Of time and space.

Our hearts are entwined.

We are young together.

We are one and in love.

Beside this fire, our love cannot fade.

Doors may close.

Life rolls on;

But here, nothing ever changes.

We have no walls in this place—

Nothing to keep us apart.

No time or space to shed

This sharing of our passions

From flame to frame.

I despaired the flame would go out;

But your coming here brought new life to this fire.

Now, I see this flame is boundless.

Here’s, my answer: “YES” to love.

Unfeigned love will keep us warm

Until our last breath, and then beyond.

Oh, Beloved, if I’m not mistaken,

It is a long way off that we can see.

With tenderness we tread here to this place

Where warm and loyal hearts,

Lying close,

beside the fire,

Are one.

Crossroads.

We came to the crossroad

And veered to one side.

Two directions, we could have gone,

But I could only choose the one.

It is the path we follow,

And I, for one, am not going to stray from it now.

We have come too far for turning back.

We have journeyed down this path for so long

That I no longer see the city.

The lights have gone out.

It is only a glimpse of your eyes now and then.

In the glow of the headlights,

I see them gleaming.

You have not tired.

Although I fall in and out of sleep,

You are still there,

Waiting for me to wake,

Waiting for me to smile,

Waiting for me to see.

Although I chose the path,

You are the one

Who speeds us down the way.

MY BELOVED

Beloved, you have found me!

You’re reaching out your hand.

I marvel at your presence.

Please, try to understand.

The path I trod was thorny.

I often was alone,

But now that you have found me,

Your love becomes my throne.

Beloved, look behind me

To see how far I’ve come.

Please, wake with me each morning.

Remind me I have some

Fine places to be walking,

More destinies unknown.

Please, come with me, my darling.

Your love’s become my home.
